Chris Chittell reveals why Emmerdale is winning ALL the soap awards

And he should know

Emmerdale star Chris Chittell has revealed why he thinks the ITV soap is running away with almost all the soap awards at the moment.

The actor who plays Eric Pollard said in an interview with the Daily Star Sunday that he believes Emmerdale is on such a high because of it’s humour.

He told the publication: “We’re doing wonders – we are producing material people like.

“Most crucially we have humour. And humour is a lot harder to deliver than drama. That’s what seems to be going down well for us at the moment.”

And having played Pollard for over 30 years, Chris should know what he’s talking about.

His co-star Sally Dexter who plays Eric’s love interest Faith Dingle also commented, adding that the beautiful setting of the Yorkshire Dales helps too.

She said: “We have fantastic countryside, which lifts our spirits.

“And I think somehow that comes through on the television as well.”

Emmerdale’s rival soap Coronation Street has come under fire recently for its drama-heavy storylines that some viewers have felt are too dark for the previously humorous soap.

Corrie has featured storylines such as the sexual abuse of teenager Bethany Platt, her uncle David’s male rape and Pat Phelan’s kidnap and murder spree.

Emmerdale has had its share of controversy too however with the brutal acid attack on fan favourite Ross Barton.

The episode, which saw Simon McManus throw a corrosive substance into Ross’s face, prompted over 300 complaints to TV watchdog, OfCom.

The soap was cleared of any wrong doing last month.

Meanwhile it’s been rumoured that Corrie bosses are planning on making Tyrone Dobbs and Fiz Stape the new Jack and Vera Duckworth to bring some light relief back to the show.
