Bless her, Gina Seddon tries – but her actions on Coronation Street next week might strengthen the fraud case against her sister Sally Metcalfe.

In scenes set to air on Monday, Tim’s dad Geoff puts on a barbecue in the hope it will encourage his son and Sally to work their differences.

But after Dev Alahan finds a mobile phone stashed in the conservatory roof’s gutter while retrieving his son’s lost ball, everyone at the family gathering realises it is the burner phone crucial to Duncan Radfield’s alibi the police are searching for.

The scamming conman has somehow managed to plant the phone – containing all the faked messages suggesting he and Sally were having an affair – right where he’d hoped the police would find it.

And while Geoff decides to inform the police, Gina has other ideas about the best course of action.

She retrieves it from where Geoff has hidden it under a plant pot and gets rid, unbeknownst to anyone else.

But when Sally and Tim let the police in at Number 4 and take them to where they think the phone has been put for safe keeping, they are mortified to find it has gone.

She may mean well, but Gina has certainly got it wrong again.

With her reputation and possibly her freedom on the line, will Sally forgive her sister for potentially making it look like she has something to hide?

Gina’s hasty behaviour does not reflect well on former mayor Sally, who was arrested earlier this week during a fundraising event for her former husband Kevin’s son Jack Webster.

Her honesty has already been made to look a little shaky after Tim lied to her about the mysterious £1000 in her bank account.

She thought the money was a Streetcars bonus from Tim but it was actually a token amount of the £40,000 swiped by Duncan to make her look like his accomplice.

And Tim – rattled by Duncan’s claims of an affair with his wife – was also tricked by the scammer after walloping Sally’s tormentor when they staked out his house.

His arrest for assault has done Sally no favours as she battles to clear her name.

Gina’s misguided attempts to protect Sally could very well spell the end for Sally’s defence, permitting Duncan’s lies to completely incriminate the long-running Weatherfield resident.

Oh Gina!

– Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV
