The Voice contestant shot DEAD by estranged husband

A shocking tragedy for fans of the show

A star of The Voice has been tragically shot dead by her estranged husband in what police are calling a murder-suicide.

Singer San Sreylai, 23, was gunned down at a beauty clinic near her home.

And the killer is believed to be Sreylai’s ex-husband, named by officials as 53-year-old customs officer Chey Rin.

After killing San, Chey turned the gun on himself, with both parties dying of their gunshot wounds.

Family and friends have condemned Chey Rin in the aftermath, saying he had been abusive towards his wife.

San Sreylai’s sister San Kongkea said: “They separated when she entered The Voice – the relationship become worse and worse because he is a jealous guy.”

Another friend, Dara, added: “The husband did not want Sreylai to enter singing competitions.

“And since she became a part of The Voice, the husband kept quarrelling with her. Even though they separated, he still kept bothering her.”

San Sreylai had been a popular finalist on The Voice Cambodia, and the murder took place in the upscale district of Boeung Keng Kang market, in Cambodian capital Phnom Penh.

Harrowing footage from a security camera has been uploaded since the murder, which apparently shows San talking to Chey just moments before her death.

Witnesses say they heard “three or four” gunshots in the incident, but Phnom Penh Deputy Police Chief Song Ly would not give any further details, simply stating that the investigation is ongoing.

After losing out on The Voice, San had been signed by a record label, and had been working with a production company towards pursuing her singing career.

The police investigation is ongoing, but until it is resolved we can only say we’re incredibly sorry for San’s friends and family.
