The Fall’s Jamie Dornan opens up about grief of losing his mother at just 16

Horrendous for the teenager

Jamie Dornan has opened up about the premature death of his beloved mum when he was just a teenager.

The Fall actor, now 35, reveals her death was a “horrendous time in my life and you are never over it”.

The usually private actor, who prefers to keep his personal life out of the spotlight, made the heartfelt revelations during an interview to publicise his new film Fifty Shades Freed.

Speaking to Eamonn Mallie on UTV in an episode aired on Wednesday 7 February, the Northern Irish actor recollected the trauma of his mother dying from pancreatic cancer when he was the tender age of 16.

He admitted the grief can still “smack me around the face” on some days.

He said: “I think having two kids has an impact on that. So I think the impact it had on me is forever evolving and now watching my wife be a mother and both my sisters being mothers, and seeing the role a mother plays in young lives and then realising that, you know, I didn’t have that for a section of my youth.

“It felt like a big thing at the time, obviously, and it was a horrendous time in my life.

“You are never over it.”

Jamie has two children, Dulcie and Phoebe, with his wife of four years, actress Amelia Warner.

The handsome actor also broke with tradition by speaking about his relationship with Amelia, 35.

Explaining why he gave up a hugely successful modelling career to become an actor, he revealed: “I knew the night I met her that I was going to marry her so I thought I just have to get a bit serious here and being serious to me wasn’t to continue modelling.”

Surprisingly, he also admitted that Amelia has never watched him as Christian Grey in the 50 Shades Of Grey trilogy.

50 Shades Freed is released on Friday 9 February.
