Susanna Reid tells off Piers Morgan for rude comment about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

Not so flattering to Meghan...

Piers Morgan stunned Good Morning Britain co-host Susanna Reid by making a rather rude comment about Prince Harry and his actress girlfriend Meghan Markle.

The often-controversial television host left Susanna’s jaw on the floor after referring to Meghan in a less-than-flattering way on Monday morning.

Rather than describing Suits star Meghan as Harry’s girlfriend or partner, he chose to brand her “the woman he’s having sex with”.

Ouch.

The show had been discussing Meghan’s appearance at the Invictus Games in Toronto, Canada over the weekend.

There had been much hype beforehand that the Invictus Games would mark Harry and Meghan’s first public appearance together.

But rather than sitting next to Harry, she was 18 seats away, watching the competitors with a pal.

It’s been reported that Harry and Meghan didn’t want their romance to distract from the athletes – but Piers found the whole thing ridiculous.

Ranting on GMB, he said that by sitting so far apart, all the couple had done was draw even more attention to themselves.

“By not wanting to distract, all he’s done is cause a massive distraction!” said Piers.

“I wish I could just advise the royals like, Harry, here’s what you should have done, mate. Two days ago, go to Toronto and take Meghan out for dinner, do a picture, give them what they want, and then just have her sit next to you!

“It looks ridiculous to be having you there and your girlfriend of a year sitting over there just because some bloke at the palace said, ‘We can’t have you sitting next to your girlfriend’.”

Susanna interjected to say: “It’s precisely not because some bloke at the palace said that. It’s because newspapers are obsessed with their relationship and Prince Harry wants all the focus to be on the Invictus Games.”

But Piers countered by laughing: “Well, that worked didn’t it? All the focus today is on why they weren’t sitting together! It’s the complete opposite!

“It’s ridiculous for Harry to be over there. When have you ever been to a sporting event where you’re literally 50 feet away from the woman you’re having sex with – it’s ridiculous.”

Perhaps realising he may have taken it too far, Piers added: “Can we say that at this time of the morning?”

An appalled Susanna told him: “How come we’ve got to twelve minutes past seven and you’re saying that on television? Can you not say sharing a room instead?”

An unimpressed Piers replied: “Do you not realise how ridiculous you sound? Sharing a room?

“My point is, if you’re boyfriend and girlfriend, you sit together. It looks ridiculous sitting miles apart at the same event.

“They’ve done it to apparently avoid attention but all they’ve done now is get ten times as much attention so clearly it didn’t work.”

Susanna told him: “I’m just aware there are children watching.”

Harry, 32, created the Invictus Games, which is a sporting event for wounded, injured or sick members of the armed forces.

Meghan’s appearance to support her man has, inevitably, led to a fresh wave of speculation that an engagement announcement is in the making.

It came after Meghan, 35, spoke publicly about Harry for the first time in an interview with Vanity Fair.

“We’re two people who are really happy and in love,” she said.

“I’m sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time. This is for us.

“It’s part of what makes it so special, that it’s just ours. But we’re happy. Personally, I love a great love story.”

Some royal commentators pointed to Meghan’s comments about a “time when we will have to come forward” as a cryptic hint about a future engagement.

Harry has never publicly spoken about Meghan but last year he did release an unprecedented statement via Kensington Palace in which he defended Meghan against a barrage of negative stories being written about her.

The palace have not responded to engagement speculation so only time will tell if another royal wedding is in the works…
