Sophie Ellis-Bextor reacts to “ridiculous” remarks about baby’s gender

She is already a proud mum to four sons

Pregnant Sophie Ellis-Bextor has said she genuinely doesn’t mind whether her fifth child is a boy or a girl.

The popstar and former Strictly Come Dancing contestant, 39, took to Instagram to reveal how people presume she’s eager for a girl after giving birth to four sons.

She posted a screenshot showing a variety of remarks she’s been subjected to.

They included, “Is this the little girl you’ve been hoping for?” and “I know you don’t mind, but I just really wanted you to have a girl.”

Sophie acknowledged that most people are speaking with good intentions, but said talk of whether she’d prefer a certain gender over the other is “ridiculous”.

She told her fans: “I am lucky enough to be expecting my fifth baby. I am fortunate to have four happy healthy kids already who happen to all be boys.

“Sometimes I have folk say well-intentioned but truly ridiculous things to me about having the same gender.

“Of course, all I am hoping is my new baby is happy and healthy too so I’m trying to come up with a good retort to these daft comments. Best I’ve got so far is ‘oh no, we’re trying for a boy of course!’.

“Anyhoo I’m sure my kids know I’ve never wanted any of them to be anyone other than who they are, willy or no willy. X.”

Sophie’s fans were quick to applaud her words with many saying they’d encountered similar comments over the years in regards to their own children’s gender.

Sophie announced her pregnancy on an episode of Chris Evans’ BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show back in August.

She broke the news while discussing her upcoming album, released January next year, saying: “The album will come out around the same time as my fifth infant because I’m having my fifth baby because I’m mental!”

Sophie is married to The Feeling bassist Richard Jones.

When Chris asked Sophie if life gets easier the more children she has, she replied: “No, I don’t think it does, but I think you get more relaxed with the chaos.

“I’ve just had a week away with Richard and five kids because our eldest brought a mate. I took a book which seems now the most optimistic thing I could have done as it didn’t even get opened! But I do have a two-year-old.”

Sophie and Richard are already parents to four sons: Sonny, 14, Kit, nine, Ray, six, and Jesse, two.

She had hinted the family could expand one day during a previous interview with Hello magazine, when she said: “After I had my first and second children, I was often asked, ‘Are you having another?’ Now, after four, it’s very telling that I’m getting ‘Are you stopping now?’

“If you ask other people in my household, they would say, ‘Yes, we’re done.’ My answer would be more along the lines of, ‘I guess I should stop now… Shouldn’t I?'”

Sophie’s upcoming album will be her seventh studio album.
