Simon Cowell speaks out on Ant McPartlin addiction battle

Ant has been battling a prescription drug and alcohol addiction

X Factor boss Simon Cowell has vowed to support pal Ant McPartlin, who is currently in rehab for a prescription drug and alcohol addiction, in a heartwarming statement.

The 57-year-old described Ant, 41, as “one of the most genuine people” as he broke his silence on the presenter’s rehab battle.

Ant is coming to the end of his rehab stint and is gearing up to leave and start his recovery process outside of the rehabilitation centre.

The dad-of-one told The Sun that he had no idea of Ant’s addiction battle.

He told the publication: “No never. I mean, look, I have worked in entertainment for a long long time and I’ve seen what happens with pressure. I’m not making excuses here.”

Going on to talk about Ant, Simon said: “I’ve worked with him for 16 years. All I can tell you about Ant is he’s one of the most genuine people you’ll ever meet.

“He hasn’t changed in all the years I’ve known him.

“I don’t know details behind the scenes.”

Vowing to stand by the treasured presenter Simon, who is in a relationship with Lauren Silverman, revealed: “But when someone has the courage to own it, deal with it, made a public statement, we would a million per cent support him. I think he’ll be fine.

“He’s got great people around him and also he’s got a great family around him. Dec’s his best friend.”

The much-loved TV star checked himself into rehab back in June after admitting to wife Lisa Armstrong and best pal Dec that he needed help.

Shortly after ITV bosses said they were willing to give him all the support he needs.

In a statement an ITV source said: “The feeling amongst senior executives is that Ant has been very brave to admit this. He’s got our total backing and he knows he can take as much time as he needs.

“If there’s anything we can do to support him in getting better then of course he only needs to ask – he’s a huge part of the ITV family and that isn’t going to change.

“He has many friends here who are right behind him, and hope to see him out of rehab and on the mend as soon as possible.

“Those close to him are very impressed by how open and honest he has been about his issues – it can’t have been easy for him and it took real courage.”

Ant also released a statement which read: “The first step is to admit to yourself you need help.

“I feel like I have let a lot of people down and for that I am truly sorry.

“I want to thank my wife, family and closest friends for helping me through this really difficult time.”

He added: “I’ve spoken out because I think it’s important that people ask for help if they’re going through a rough time and get the proper treatment to help their recovery.”

Ant, who has had no visitors during his time in rehab, was recently spotted enjoying a day out from his rehab centre.

In pictures posted on The Sun Online, the presenter gave a thumbs up in indication that he’s doing well.

This is the first time the Geordie star has been seen since he admitted his issues.

The publication reports that he has enjoyed walks to the park and trips to the shops after a month of treatment.
