When Scarlett Moffatt booked a girls’ only trip to New York with her 11-year-old sister she was probably expecting a couple of days of fun abroad – NOT to kick off a major debate.

But that’s what happened after some people questioned the former I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! star for taking her sister Ava out of school at term-time.

Scarlett, 26, revealed on Friday that she and Ava were off to the Big Apple for a “sister weekend” – immediately sparking a lively debate among followers about whether children should miss school to go abroad.

It came just two days after Scarlett had shared her pride at Ava starting secondary school.

One wrote: “I took my son to Florida in middle of August a few years back , in total he missed 3 school days but I got a £120 fine…does she not go to school then?”

She then followed up: “Every day a child misses at school matters and if she’s just started secondary school then it’s very important.

“Don’t get me wrong because I’ve taken mine out too and I regret it even though I paid £120 for the fine, but it wasn’t a holiday it was for business and no one was available to look after him.

“I just think she shouldn’t have took to social media to glamorise the fact she’s going to New York during school time.

Another joked: “I’m sure she started back few days ago maybe she’s pulling a sickie.”

Others, however, waded in to defend Scarlett, with one saying: “Why do people ask about school? Don’t really think its anyone’s business what other people do!!! Have a ball making memories.”

Further followers pointed out Scarlett was taking Ava away for the weekend so at the most she’d miss the Friday at school.

One wrote: “She’ll be in year 7, she’ll not fail her GCSEs just with a Friday off school.”

Another follower remarked: “Travel and learning about other cultures is some of the best education any one could hope for.”

A third added: “What an incredible thing to do for your little sister. She will never forget these memories you have made together. Ignore all the miseries on here slating you for taking her out of school. As if a few days will do her any harm! Lucky girl!”

Scarlett has yet to respond to any of the remarks and is instead focused on having a brilliant time with Ava.

As well as taking her to the Stardust Diner in Times Square, she treated her little sis to a showing of The Lion King on Broadway, a trip around Central Park and nabbed tickets to RuPaul’s Drag Con.

What a big sister!
