Savannah Guthrie Under Fire for 'Insensitive' Comment on 'Today'

"That was such a poor choice of words," one viewer ranted.

Today viewers criticized Savannah Guthrie for her "poor choice of words" during a heartbreaking segment on Friday's show.

Savannah and her fellow co-anchors were discussing the tragic story of a freak accident in Ohio that claimed the life of 16-year-old Kyle Plush, after he got trapped underneath the rear seat bench of his family's minivan on April 10.

But Guthrie, 46, was slammed by viewers after she described the story as "crushing."

Plush was trapped in his car in the parking lot of his school, Seven Hills School, in Cincinnati with his cellphone out of reach.

At 3:14 p.m. Plush used "voice commands" to call 911. The audio of the call heard Plush say: "I'm stuck in my van outside the Seven Hills parking lot."

But Plush was unable to hear the dispatcher and the call was cut off. The dispatcher is said to have tried to call Plush again but there was no answer.

At 3:26 p.m. police arrived at the scene but could not find anyone in trouble.

Minutes later, Plush made another 911 call to send a heartbreaking message to his mother.

"I probably don't have much time left so tell my mom that I love her if I die," Plush is heard saying. "This is not a joke."

The teenager then provided the make, color and model of his car.

However, police say that information "never made it to the responding officers," who may have believed the call was "a prank."

Almost six hours after Plush's first 911 call, his father found him dead in the van.

An autopsy determined Plush had died from asphyxia due to "chest compression."

"Tragic ending for a young man classmates say was an example to all," Craig told viewers. "That second dispatcher has now been placed on administrative leave amid a full investigation and review of all."

"Craig, this is just crushing," Savannah said during the segment.

It wasn't long before viewers took to Twitter to slam Savannah for her "insensitive" comment.

One person called Savannah's remark a "poor choice of words," while another said they were left "speechless."
