Nick Grimshaw quits BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show

He'll swap shows with Greg James this autumn

Nick Grimshaw has quit BBC Radio 1’s Breakfast Show after six years.

The 33-year-old announced his decision via Instagram, calling the Breakfast Show a “dream” job but saying it’s time to move on.

Fans of the DJ can breathe a sigh of relief as he also confirmed he’ll stay with Radio 1, swapping shows with fellow DJ Greg James, who comes in as the new Breakfast Show host.

Nick explained: “It was always my dream to do the Breakfast Show and I’m very grateful that I got to live my dream everyday for what will be 6 years.

“But 6 years is a long time and this isn’t a forever job. I had the time of my life.

“I’ve decided it’s time for a change and a new show. I love Radio 1 and can’t wait to get on with the new time slot and the removal of all alarms from my house.

“I’m so happy to be swapping shows with my friend and yours @gregjames17 and can’t wait to wake up to him each morning.

“Not literally. Just on the radio. Unless he’s up for it. 👀🤷🏻‍♂️.”

Nick also broke the news to listeners on Thursday morning while reflecting on how he’ll mark six years as Breakfast Show host in September.

“I have become the second longest host of the Radio 1 Breakfast Show in history, which is pretty big,” he said.

“Only second now to Chris Moyles, who did a monumental eight years of early starts. It’s too long!”

“When I was little, it was my dream to do this show,” continued Nick. “From the age of ten I was very precise about wanting to do the Radio 1 Breakfast Show. It was the most fun radio. It really was.

“It was dead scary coming to do this show, which in September will be six years ago. It’s honestly been a literal dream as a child coming true every day. It’s quite weird that. I think I’m a witch! I wanted to do it and now I do it every day. Not everyone gets to do exactly what they want with their lives and I’m so grateful for that and I love it.

“But I’m tired. Really tired. You have no idea. I’ve decided it’s time for a change, time for a new show and, most importantly, time for a new wake up call! Preferably 11.30, a little dog walk, maybe a bit of lunch…

“I’ve loved doing the Breakfast Show but I’m not going to do it anymore.”

Radio 1 confirmed the news, telling listeners: “Don’t worry though guys, Grimmy may be stepping down from the Breakfast Show but he’s staying with the station and our friend and yours, Mr Greg James will be waking you up every morning. Congratulations to both of you, we love you both!”

Greg currently hosts the 4pm to 7pm slot on Radio 1.

The two DJs will swap shows this autumn.

Greg said: “I am completely beside myself that I’ve been given the chance to present the most famous radio show in the world. It really doesn’t get any bigger than this and I really want to build on the great work Grimmy has done.

“The listeners have become like mates during the ten years I’ve been on air, so to be there when they wake up is a real honour. They’re always front and centre and this will of course be the case on the new Breakfast Show.

“It’s going to be the most enjoyable challenge I’ve ever undertaken and I can’t wait to get started.”
