ITV to remove show favourites from Netflix

The shows include Broadchurch, Love Island and Marcella

| Updated:

ITV will be removing programmes including Broadchurch, Victoria and Love Island from Netlix.

The broadcaster is apparently planning to launch it’s own streaming site to rival Netflix instead.

ITV’s chief executive Dame Carolyn McCall said the broadcaster will be pulling its shows from Netflix over the coming years.

Carolyn said subscriptions to the ITV Hub, which allows viewers to see shows abroad, have increased this summer due to Love Island and the World Cup.

ITV boxsets including Broadchurch, Prime Suspect, Marcella and Love Island are currently on Netflix.

However, Carolyn said that in the future ITV will have to think about their UK rights more carefully if they intend to launch a streaming service.

“If we are developing subscription we have to develop it effectively,” she added, during conference call as ITV unveiled its half-yearly results.

Meanwhile, The Independent reports that Caroyn added: “ITV is well placed to take advantage of this opportunity and our strategy refresh will enable us to drive profit from three separate sources – advertisers, broadcasters/platforms and consumers.

“ITV will be more than TV – it will be a structurally sound integrated producer broadcaster where we aim to maintain total viewing and increase total advertising revenue.

“It will be a growing and profitable content business, which drives returns and it will create value by developing and nurturing strong direct consumer relationships, where people want to spend money on a range of content and experiences with a really trusted brand.”

Recent reports have suggested that ITV is in discussions with the BBC and Channel 4 to take on Netflix.

However, none of the broadcasters have confirmed whether the collaboration is likely.
