England’s World Cup success sparks petition for bank holiday celebration

If it's coming home, we'll all need a lie-in!

It’s coming home… maybe. The chances of England winning the World Cup this summer are looking much better than most of us would have dared to dream.

But as our squad battles it out in our first semi-final in the competition since 1990, thoughts are already turning to potential victory at Sunday’s final.

And with great victory for the Brits in particular comes mammoth celebration. Eng-er-landdddddddddd! And then an almighty hangover…

Fans have a solution – a bank holiday this coming Monday! Some 240,000 supporters have already signed a petition supporting the idea.

Once a petition reaches 100,000 signatures, Parliament has to at least consider debating the motion.

And, as the Government petition has easily passed this mark, Parliament will now have…

The petition was posted by Liam Betson, who’s said: “If England win the World Cup, the Monday should be made a bank holiday for 2018.

“We need this for all those supporting England as the next day will not be pleasant for all fans.”

And the notion is supported by opposition leader, Jeremy Corbyn; a Labour party spokesperson said even before England reached the semis: “We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves.

“But I think it is the case that Jeremy believes that if England were to win the World Cup there should be a public bank holiday in celebration.

“The World Cup is a very special international competition.

“It’s something that brings people together on a very large scale and we need recognition of that and recognition of the importance of football in the country.”

However, bad news, lads and ladies. Normally it takes months for such debates to come round to Parliament. But if everyone lobbies Theresa May hard enough…
