Duke and Duchess of Cambridge announce baby son’s name

The fifth in line to the throne was born at the Lindo Wing on Monday

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have named their son Louis Arthur Charles.

A statement released by Kensington Palace on Friday read: “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their son Louis Arthur Charles.

“The baby will be known as His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Cambridge.”

Louis is one of William’s middle names. It’s also the middle name of Prince George and was the name of Prince Philip’s uncle, Louis Mountbatten.

Charles is, of course, a nod to William’s father, Prince Charles, and his uncle, Charles Spencer, the brother of the late Princess Diana.

Arthur, meanwhile, is also one of William’s middle names, and was the middle name of the Queen’s father, King George VI.

Prince William and wife Kate became parents for the third time on Monday morning, when Kate gave birth to a little boy at 11.01 am.

The new prince, who is fifth in line to the throne, was born at the exclusive Lindo Wing at St. Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London.

It’s been suggested the royal couple delayed announcing the newborn’s name as they wanted William’s father, Prince Charles, to meet him first.

Charles is believed to have been in Edinburgh when the baby was born, and then he travelled to France for Anzac Day memorial services, meaning he was unable to meet the newborn until now.

It’s also considered tradition to tell The Queen of a royal baby’s name before the public.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told BBC News: “When you choose a name for a royal baby there’s the personal [preference]; there’s the link with the royals past and present; but also you think about the public.

“The Queen would obviously be consulted and, while she might not necessarily intervene and prevent a name from being used, she would certainly be aware of the name, long before any public announcement.”

Kate was taken to the private maternity ward at around 6am on Monday, in the early stages of labour.

The birth was announced by Kensington Palace just after 1pm.

A statement issued on behalf the royal couple read: “Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 11.01 hrs.”

It continued: “The baby weighs 8lbs 7oz. The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well.

“The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news.”

A beaming William, 35, was seen leaving the hospital just after 4pm to drive back to Kensington Palace and collect Prince George, four, and Princess Charlotte, two.

The little royals were then seen arriving at the hospital with their dad to meet the new baby.

At around 6pm, the world got its first glimpse of the newborn prince, as William and Kate left the hospital with the baby in their arms.

Another statement issued by Kensington Palace thanked the staff at St. Mary’s for their assistance during the birth.

It read: “Their Royal Highnesses would like to thank all staff at the hospital for the care and treatment they have received. They would also like to thank everyone for their warm wishes.”

William gave an update on Kate and the new arrival on Wednesday when he attended an Anzac Day service at Westminster Abbey.

He told fellow attendees: “They’re very well thanks. In good form, luckily. Sleeping’s going reasonably well so far, so he’s behaving himself, which is good news.”

Royal commentators have said they don’t expect to see Kate out in public again until her brother in law Prince Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle on May 19.

It’s expected that George and Charlotte will be members of the wedding party, but royal experts have suggested we may not see the newborn prince, and instead he’ll be looked after away from the cameras, given his young age.

Prince Harry announced on Thursday that he’s asked William to be his best man, as expected.
