'American Idol' Reboot Off to Solid Start Despite Tough Challenges

It had its highs and lows.

American Idol has finally made its big TV comeback, and by the looks of it, there were enough eyes on the premiere that ABC should be pleased.

Although Nielsen ratings put the series at its lowest season premiere in its history, it still managed to crush the Sunday night competition.

Idol was the night's most-watched show with 10.3 million viewers, and a 2.3 rating in the all-important adults 18-49 demographic.

Idol - which aired for 15 seasons on Fox - faced serious challenges ahead of its March 11 premiere, leaving many connected to the program in fear that its loyal fans would have no interest in watching a 16th season of the show.

Ryan Seacrest may have denied all allegations of sexual assault brought against him by a former E! stylist, but there was no telling if the stage presence of the American Idol host would be detrimental to the show's ratings.

Live with Kelly and Ryan continues to thrive in ABC's morning hours, but the E! Oscars red carpet special that Seacrest hosted had terrible ratings.

Fox attempted to thwart ABC's ratings domination plan by airing O.J. Simpson: The Lost Confession? at the same time as Idol. Unfortunately, it didn't do much for them, pulling in 4.4 million viewers to make it a typical night for the network.

It's also worth mentioning that there's no telling how Idol will do when put up against NBC's The Voice.

The rival singing competition kicked off its latest season with 12.3 million viewers, a number the Idol revival was unable to reach.

With ABC deciding to air Idol's second night directly opposite The Voice, there's going to be some serious head-to-head competition going on between the two music-themed shows.

American Idol airs Sunday and Monday nights on ABC.
