This Morning viewers divided over conjoined parents’ tough decision

Viewers were moved by the decision the couple of conjoined twin girls were facing

It has to be one of the most shocking things a parent can hear at the scan. Imagine being told that you are having twins… AND they’re conjoined.

Viewers on This Morning were left divided over whether Callie and Carter Torres should undergo surgery to separate them.

Their parents say they’re not going to have their babies split unless they absolutely have to.

Callie and Carter were born in January this year even though doctors said they were unlikely to survive and advised mum Chelsea, 22, to have an abortion.

For now, Chelsea says she doesn’t see why her twins should live apart, only agreeing to an operation if there were a “medical issue”.

Meanwhile the babies are already growing up with separate personalities even if their bodies are joined.

Their father, Nick, said his babies had “completely 180 personalities from each other”, with Callie the “calm and gentle” one and Carter the more demanding of the two.

The couple were beamed live to British TV sets from Idaho, USA.

Chelsea said: “We found out that they were twins and conjoined all in the same appointment. The fact we had twins was overwhelming but when they said your twins are stuck together it was shocking.”

The twin girls share two legs, intestines and a colon and Chelsea found out how serious things were before they were born.

The couple already have a three-year-old named Jaysin, but they needed to be closer to a special hospital in Austin Texas so they packed up their things and moved 1400 miles.

Chelsea and Nick know that there’s always a chance they’ll be forced to send their girls for a very dangerous operation. Chelsea told This Morning: “I know definitely it will always be there.

“Whether it be a medical issue is my main worry. Or the point that the girls are like ‘we don’t want to be together anymore’.

“Of course we’ll have to see if there’s a medical issue that arises or if the girls do want to be separated we would consider a separation for their health.

“It’s their lives and they’re living it, we’re just aiding in the whole thing.”

Viewers weren’t sure what to make of the terrible decision the Idao couple were forced to take.

One viewer took to Twitter and said: “Aww they’re so beautiful. I hope they live a happy, healthy life. U only have 2 see Abby & Brittany Hensel 2 see it’s possible.”

Another chimed in: ” #thismorning but their futures its all well while they are babies but as they grow you will stop them getting a job..having children so sad”

A third added: “Surely instead of worrying about the future they should separate them now? How are they supposed to lead their own lives?! #thismorning” (sic).
