Speaking to hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid Gazza said: “I was doing really well the last time I was here until Jay.

“My nephew. He wasn’t in a good way, and I got him into treatment and that, but he was still not good.

“My sister tried to get him sectioned but they wouldn’t section him, because he wasn’t any danger to himself,” he added.

Paul, who has previously battled a drink and drug addiction, opened up about the horrific moment he found out Jay, who struggled with mental health issues, took his life.

He said: “It was five in the morning when my dad rang us, and before my dad even said anything I said I know, he’s passed away.”

“He didn’t wake up. Since then…sorry,” he added before breaking down in tears.

The 50-year-old then went on to explain how his life went downhill from there and he turned to drink as a coping mechanism.

Paul, who was last on the breakfast show one year ago, explained: “I’ve just had a terrible year. I’ve had these blips and things got the better of me. Then I had these tours and the drink got the better of me.”

Viewers praised Paul for the emotional interview with one tweeting: “@gazza8gascoigne very touching interview there luv … Nice one@piersmorgan.”

“Just watched @gazza8gascoigne on @GMB he should be so proud of himself.. #mentalhealthawarenessweek.”

“Well done @piersmorgan @susannareid100 on a compassionate interview with Paul Gascoigne #GMB @GMB.”

Meanwhile Good Morning Britain presenter Piers, 52, riled up viewers over his controversial mental health tweets.

The outspoken host wrote: “I’m not convinced by this new trend of male public soul-bearing. Time for our gender to get a grip, methinks. Life’s tough- man up.”

The star’s followers were unimpressed with his comments with on replying: “In case you are confused… only the bravest of men speak about their feelings! If anyone should ‘man up’.”

“This tweet is just unspeakably horrid. Have you thought about the damage it could do? Just to make you look edgy and reactionary? You’re sad,” another added.
