Final episode of The Replacement leaves one big question unanswered

Did you see the ending coming?

The BBC has just aired the final episode of psychological thriller The Replacement and the final moments had us asking a very big question…

We’ve spent weeks unable to make up our minds over who was in the wrong, but after affair revelations, and plenty of back and forth, we finally discovered it was Paula pulling the strings – and she killed Kay.

The episode didn’t start off looking good for Ellen when Paula took her upstairs to her daughter’s bedroom and revealed Caris had actually died two years earlier.

The little girl Paula had let everyone believe was her daughter was in fact her niece.

Ellen felt guilty, but continued to insist Paula wasn’t dealing with the death of her daughter and needed professional help.

When she then clashed with her boss, David, once again over Kay’s death, he revealed his wife had believed he was having an affair – with her. Now that’s a turn up!

Ellen, of course, denied it and resigned straight away…

As the episode progressed, it was when Paula threw herself down the stairs and claimed Ellen pushed her that we finally knew which woman we were rooting for.

But no one else did! It was so frustrating as Paula moved in on Ellen’s life.

However, then Ellen found out Paula’s big secret – Georgia, the woman Ellen’s been pursuing for dirt on Paula, was the driver who knocked down and killed Paula’s daughter.

As Paula realised things were unravelling for her, she kidnapped Lia, and after a tense altercation with Ellen, she told her she couldn’t let her have Lia back and the only way Ellen could save her little girl was to kill herself.

Handing Ellen the pills to do it, the frantic new mum took the lot – and Paula left her trapped.

But then Ellen came to, managed to free herself from the car, and tracked Lia down to the library. Just after Ellen arrived, so to did the police and Paula, who, it seemed had admitted everything and was arrested.

With everything out in the open, Ian wanted another chance with his wife, but as we cut to a little while in the future, it seemed she’d refused that idea as she was seen playing with her daughter at Kay’s memorial – and then David arrived…

The credits rolled and we were left wondering: has he just gone to visit his wife’s grave? Or did he know Ellen was there?

Did he go there to meet Ellen? Are they TOGETHER? Was Kay right all along – were there feelings between her husband and her best friend? We don’t know what to think!
