Emmerdale’s Emma Barton on the brink as guilt over James’s death threatens to surface

But who does she tell?

Emmerdale’s Emma Barton has been feeling the pressure of killing James Barton for a while now, and it looks like she might be about to crack.

Viewers will remember she held her fiancé hostage before he managed to escape and she ended up pushing him off a motorway bridge causing a massive car pile up.

Knowing she was responsible for James’s death hasn’t helped with Emma’s mental state. But so far, she’s managed to pass it off as grief and keep her cover in order to stay closer to her beloved sons.

Her lowest point probably came when she tried to manipulate vulnerable Ashley and change his memories of the event to make sure he didn’t drop her in it.

Fans immediately called for her head, but she’s stuck around and continued to manipulate every situation she possibly can to her advantage.

Things start to unravel when she finds out Faith Dingle is holding a psychic night in the pub – and claims to be able to talk to the dead.

Emma’s overreaction is obvious as, instead of checking Faith’s spiritual credentials and realising she’s a big fat fake, Emma straightaway assumes Faith’s going to contact James and find out exactly what happened the night he died.

If that doesn’t say guilty conscience, we don’t know what does!

As the psychic night gets under way at the pub, Faith is giving it a good show and Emma’s getting more and more unnerved – especially when it looks like she IS channelling James.

Emma can’t handle it and she flips out, grabbing the microphone off Madam Faith and insisting she stops.

With the punters stunned at her outburst, Emma flees the pub, fearful she’s given her secret away.

Knowing she’s on the verge of cracking up, Emma seeks solace in the church, where she weeps a confession to God, and begs for forgiveness.

She’s speaking out loud and when she hears a noise behind her, it looks like someone’s heard her – but who?

Has Faith followed her for round two? Is she the one who’s heard everything? You can bet she’ll milk it for all it’s worth if she has.

Or did vicar Harriet hear all? How would she feel torn between her holy duty and reporting the crime to the police?

Could it be someone else altogether?

Speaking to Digital Spy, Sally Dexter, who plays Faith, revealed:

“If Faith does turn out to be that person [who overhears], I think it would put Emma under a lot of pressure. Faith is a good person, but she also has a darker side to her. She may well use whatever she did or didn’t hear against the other person and to her own advantage.”

Is Emma in serious danger of being exposed?
