Shirley Ballas appointed as new head judge on Strictly Come Dancing

The incoming head judge wants to clear the air

Earlier this week Strictly Come Dancing confirmed that their new head judge was to be dance world supremo Shirley Ballas.

Rumours immediately started circulating that her fellow judges, Bruno Tonioli, Craig Revel Horwood, and in particular Darcey Bussell might not be too pleased by the new appointment.

And now it’s been revealed that Shirley is keen to get things off to a good start and clear the air so they can move forward all getting along.

A source told The Sun: “Craig and Bruno have been mates with Shirley for years because they have mixed in the same circles.

“But she has never met Darcey and wanted to get to know her straight away.

“It wasn’t clear that Len’s replacement would also be the show’s head judge and Darcey no doubt had hopes because she had been tipped for the role.”

They continued: “Shirley just wants to meet up, introduce herself and above all else, seek her advice about the show.

“I’m sure they’ll get along fine and put the appointment behind them so there is no awkwardness before the new series.”

Shirley is well-known by most of the show’s pro dancers as she taught a lot of them to dance, and they affectionately call her “Mamma Ballas”.

She beat pro-dancer Anton Du Beke, who was one of the favourites to take the spot on the panel, as well as former Strictly champ Karen Hardy, and Ireland’s Dancing With The Stars judges Loraine Barry and Brian Redmond.

Speaking of her new role, Shirley wrote on her Instagram page: “I am so excited to announce that I will be joining the judging panel on @BBCStrictly.

“Strictly is so loved by the British public, I have always been a massive fan. I can’t wait!”

Shirley’s thought to be in LA at the moment watching her son, Mark Ballas, a Dancing With The Stars pro himself, perform on the tour of Broadway musical Jersey Boys.

Reportedly flying into London this weekend, a meeting with Darcey is apparently top of her priority list to get things off to a good start.

We think the ladies will get on just fine – and probably end up teaming up against Mr Nasty Craig!
