Call The Midwife viewers devastated by shock Nurse Crane storyline

It came out of the blue

They’re all good eggs on Call The Midwife. But viewers hold special affection for Phyllis Crane. So many were not happy when she became the centre of a police investigation, after running over a little boy.

Nurse Crane had just delivered a fourth baby boy for Mrs Antoine but, as she returned home, she knocked down her eldest son, Lenny.

At the police station, she suffered the indignity of giving a urine sample to check she hadn’t imbibed any alcohol, as Mr Antoine revealed he had served her a sherry (which, of course, she didn’t drink).

Despite it being obvious that the little lad had run in front of Nurse Crane’s car, she suffered a terrible crisis of confidence.

Her vocation meant she took people’s pain away, she explained, not inflict it.

Awww, Nurse Crane!

There was an outpouring of shock and sympathy on Twitter.

Meanwhile in this episode, the story of thalidomide baby Susan was revisited.
