Ant McPartlin checks into rehab to tackle booze and substance issues

Presenter reportedly wept as he told Dec and his wife Lisa he needed help

Beloved TV presenter Ant McPartlin has checked into rehab to get help for booze, drug and prescription medication addiction.

The BGT, Takeway and I’m a Celeb star released a statement, saying:

“The first step is to admit to yourself you need help.

“I feel like I have let a lot of people down and for that I am truly sorry.

“I want to thank my wife, family and closest friends for helping me through this really difficult time.

“I’ve spoken out because I think it’s important that people ask for help if they’re going through a rough time and get the proper treatment to help their recovery.”

It’s not known where Ant, 41, will be receiving his treatment, but he is expected to reside at a clinic for at least two months.

There is, of course, a huge amount of speculation about what has caused him to abuse booze and drugs.

The Geordie favourite has been suffering excruciating pain from a knee injury for the past two years, which has led to an over-reliance on powerful painkiller Tramadol.

It’s been reported that he turned to booze as he and wife Lisa, 40, struggled to conceive a baby – Ant has spoken on multiple occasions of his desire to start a family with his wife of over a decade.

The Sun on Sunday is reporting that he turned to drugs as he became depressed and anxious.

Ant apparently wept when he told make-up artist Lisa and his sidekick Declan Donnelly that he needed help.

A source told the tabloid: “The drugs and alcohol were playing an increasingly important role in helping Ant function each day.

“He hid it very well from those closest to him but it was obvious that it had become an issue at home.”

Good for him for speaking openly – and best wishes for his recovery.
