Adam, who’s just bagged a role on Hollyoaks, was living in New Zealand at the time and starring in soap Shortland Street.

Speaking to OK! Magazine about the incident, he told them the full story about it:

“That story is so ridiculous!” he said before going on to explain the truth.

“The day before it happened I got a call to tell me that my cousin – who is like a sister to me – had breast cancer, so I had a bit too much to drink.

“The next day I went food shopping with a huge hangover. I bought nearly £400 worth of goods, but I accidentally left a bread roll, a packet of cheese and a sachet of HP sauce in the trolley.

“I had to run out of the supermarket to be sick and they chased after me and accused me of shoplifting.”

Revealing he was keen to tell his side of the story Adam also said:

“I made a conscious decision when I started out in this industry to be as up front as possible.

“I never wanted my job to change me as a person, so if someone wants to know the truth behind a story, I’ll always tell them.”

Adam is set to join Hollyoaks next month as Nancy Osborne’s ex-boyfriend, Kyle. The pair meet up again at a support group for sufferers of MS, which long-time character Nancy has just discovered she has.

The actor also opened up to OK! about his real life suffering, explaining he has Ankylosing Spondilitis, a disease that causes the vertebrae of the spine to fuse together if he stays still for too long.

He revealed he exercises for two hours a day to ease the pain as the condition could see him end up in a wheelchair.
