This Morning’s Dr Ranj ‘wants to be part of Strictly’s first same-sex couple’

He believes it would be "important" for the show

This Morning’s Dr Ranj would like to be partnered with a male when he takes to the ballroom for this year’s Strictly Come Dancing, according to reports.

Dr Ranj – full name Ranj Singh – has signed up for the new series of the BBC show and would apparently like to be in a same-sex couple.

The TV doctor, who is openly gay, has been quoted saying that the format change would be “incredibly important” in this day and age.

Dr Ranj, 38, told The Mirror: “I would love to dance with a same-sex partner.

“I would value a time when same-sex couples could dance on shows like Strictly. It is incredibly important.”

The concept of same-sex couples on Strictly has been hotly debated for years and Dr Ranj isn’t the only famous face to support the idea.

Just this week, Strictly professional Kevin Clifton said he would be happy to be partnered with a fellow man on the show.

Writing on Twitter, the 35-year-old dancer said: “Just to be clear, I’m not involved in any of these decisions.

“But if that’s what they wanted then I’d have no problem with it.”

However, a spokesperson for Strictly has said introducing same-sex couples is not something that is currently being considered.

A rep said: “Strictly has chosen the longstanding ballroom-dancing format of mixed-sex couples.”

The new series of Strictly Come Dancing kicks off next month and, for the past week, the BBC has begun unveiling this year’s contestants.
