Ben Shephard reveals why he turned down Strictly Come Dancing offer

The new series returns later this year

Ben Shephard has revealed he was asked to do Strictly Come Dancing this year but he turned the offer down.

During Friday’s Good Morning Britain, Ben, Charlotte Hawkins and Sean Fletcher discussed the rumours surrounding this year’s line-up with former contestant Laura Whitmore.

When asked if he would be the next GMB presenter to compete on the show, Ben revealed he can’t because he has a football show to host on Sundays.

As Strictly fans will know, Charlotte, Richard Arnold and Susanna Reid have all been contestants on the BBC show.

Laura said: “You have to have someone from the Good Morning Britain team.”

Ben looked at Sean, who then said: “No, definitely Ben, he can dance, have you seen Ben?”

Ben said: “You’re right in with the BBC you do all that other stuff with the BBC so you’re practically one of them so they’d get you really cheap.”

Laura and Charlotte, who was a contestant on the show last year, were keen to quiz Ben on whether he’s doing the show.

Ben replied: “This is the first year I’ve been asked, the very first year I’d been asked but I can’t do it as I do a football show on Sundays.”

Laura, who competed in the competition in 2016, asked Ben if he would do the show if he had no other commitments.

Ben replied: “Well I think one of the things is…the rumours as I understand is they’re struggling because lots of people are nervous about the curse of Strictly.”

He then joked: “That’s absolutely the only reason I was going to do it!

“To be honest, after 25 years with Mrs S and she’s like that as well, like ‘oh go on just go.'”

The brand new series is set to return this autumn and rehearsals started this week.

The judges and celebrity contestants for this year’s Strictly have yet to be revealed.

However, famous faces rumoured to be doing the show include TV presenter Scarlett Moffatt, singer Rick Astley, actor Ross Kemp, former Corrie actress Catherine Tyldesley and telly presenter Les Dennis.
