Holly and Phil have luxury item confiscated during This Morning

They were inspired by a decision Simon Cowell recently made

Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby were given a huge challenge on Monday’s This Morning.

Following news X Factor boss Simon Cowell has become “way more focused” and more aware of the people around him since giving up his mobile phone 10 months ago, the duo handed over their own devices.

Vanessa Feltz, who agrees with Simon’s decision, appeared on the programme to encourage the pair to give up their phones for the duration of the show.

At the beginning of the show, Holly said: “I’m quite attached to my phone, not just for social media but my mum might ring me or [my children’s] school might ring me.

“I use it for all sorts of things.”

Phil added: “Yes, mine is never out of my hand!”

Vanessa told the pair: “I reckon anything Simon Cowell can do, you two can do it better.”

But Phil wasn’t convinced and replied: “But he doesn’t need his phone because he’s got an entire team [telling him what he needs to do].”

Vanessa then encouraged the pair to hand over the mobile phones so she could lock them away in a safe.

But Phil was slightly reluctant and wouldn’t let go of his mobile.

Trying to take his mobile out of his hand, Holly said: “You have to do this, it’s a social experiment. Put it down.”

As their mobile phones were placed inside the safe, Phil exclaimed: “I miss you!”

Later on in the show, Holly told viewers she was struggling without her phone.

She said she first thought the experiment was “ridiculous,” but when it came to the commercial breaks she didn’t know what to do with herself.

The star admitted: “I’m really surprised at how much it’s bothering me,” as Phil added: “Holly is struggling more than me!”

At the end of the show the pair were finally reunited with their phones.

Holly exclaimed: “Is it that time?” as Phil asked Vanessa: “Can we have them back now?”

Vanessa replied: “Yes, you’ve really suffered.”

As the pair frantically checked their phones, Holly said: “I’ve got 31 Whatsapp messages! See, it’s my family Whatsapp messages. I have to know these things!”
